do what you like.

on wednesday's i have two different professors. both are ancient. my nursing professor started teaching in the 1960's. she helped start the nursing program at saginaw valley. today we decided that she has to be in her 70's, at least. after we figured it out, one of my peers said "why doesnt she just retire already?" another peer said "good for her, she only teaches once a week, i'd do that just for something to do even if i did retire."

it made me think. this woman tells the craziest stories. and they dont relate to class ever. she gets very emotional in class. i've seen her cry in class when talking about difficult things like death. her test questions dont make a lick of sense. but (i know there has to be a but). she isnt teaching just because. she really loves her job. she loves being a nurse (we'e heard stories of the trials she went through in nursing school). and she is so real. she always tells us that she never apologizes for crying. not even to patients or their families or to us. she says you cant take emotion out of this job. and she wont apologize for the way she feels.

there is something to be said about that. she know who she is. and she wont apologize for being that way. she is confident in who she is and if emotional and very compassionate is what she is, nothing less than that is good enough. isnt there something to be said about someone who wont sacrifice?

and isnt there something to be said about a woman who struggled greatly in nursing school but 50 years later she is still doing what she loves?

what i have taken from this:
1. dont ever apologize for who you are.
2. dont sacrifice (you deserve better).
3. do what you like and like what you do.
